Our class is celebrating the Olympics in a big way! Throughout the duration of the Sochi Winter Olympics, we will be doing many different Olympic-themed activities in our room. The fun has already begun with our Opening Ceremonies (see pictures below). The kids got into teams of 4-5 and picked a country to represent. They then did research on the location, famous landmarks, resources, and interesting information related to their country. At our opening ceremonies, they presented this information, displayed the flag of their country, and then listened to the national anthem. It was a fun and exciting experience!
Next week, teams will begin tracking and graphing their country's gold, silver, and bronze medal counts. They will be doing this, as a competition, throughout the duration of the Olympics. Some other fun activities that we will be doing are: reading informational articles about the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, using our classroom computers to answer trivia questions about past Olympic events, comparing and contrasting the Olympics and the Paralympics, and creating a large bar graph of the overall results of their medal counts at the end of the Olympics. It is bound to be a blast, and the kids are already very excited! The Olympics are such a huge part of our global history and culture, and it is going to be exciting and enlightening for the kids to explore the rich history and traditions! Let the games begin!
